Yes, looks like I did forget to say what a cama americana actually was. It refers to two-layer bed that looks much like a box-spring and mattress (as opposed to a just a frame and a mattress). The cloth-covered bottom half, though, doesn't contain any springs; it's just a rigid base, as Pablo mentions above. If you read Spanish, Falabella explains the difference here.

Mh… old thread, anyway, a cama americana is a regular solid (or ridgid) bed base. Period.
